Secure Web gateway solutions protect Web-surfing PC/Laptop/Mobile from infection and enforce company policies. A secure Web gateway is a solution that filters unwanted software/malware from user-initiated Web/Internet traffic and enforces corporate and regulatory policy compliance. These gateways must, at a minimum, include URL filtering, malicious-code detection and filtering, and application controls for popular Web-based applications, such as instant messaging (IM) and Skype. Native or integrated data leak prevention is also increasingly included.
SWGs are implemented as on-premises appliances (hardware and virtual) or cloud-based services, or in hybrid mode (combined on-premises appliances and cloud-based services)
Enterprises are implementing the cloud-based SWGs to provide security protection for remote offices that are connected directly to the internet (instead of backhauling the traffic over Multiprotocol Label Switching [MPLS] or VPN connections to data centers that provide perimeter security).
